ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION & TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

Associate Dean, Philip Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland

No. 2 administrator of the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, identified by the Freedom Forum as one of the best journalism schools in the country with 600 undergraduate and graduate students, 50 faculty and staff, four journalism institutes, two affiliated centers, a cable television station and a national magazine. Specific responsibilities include: Master's Program Coordinator, (recruit students and advise prospective and enrolled students on curriculum and professional goals); Instructor (teach a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, including Topics in Public Affairs Reporting, Newswriting and Reporting I and II, Online Reporting, Online Journalism, Journalism Ethics, Writing the Complex Story and Reporting from Washington); Adjunct Faculty Coordinator (design core curriculum for basic writing and editing classes, recruit adjunct faculty and advise and train adjuncts on curriculum matters); Capital News Service Director (oversee editorial and administrative operations of the Washington and Annapolis bureaus, serve as liaison to client news organizations, recruit students and develop future plans); Director of Television News Operations for the cable station UMTV; Computer-Assisted Reporting Coordinator (created one of the first computer-assisted reporting courses in the country and infused CAR analysis and searching techniques throughout the curriculum); Minority Programs Liaison (spearheaded successful effort to bring national headquarters of National Association of Black Journalists to the college, secured funding and coordinated the creation of college's first course on diversity in the media and serve as member of campus-wide Graduate Minority Recruitment Committee); Broadcast and Computing Services Coordinator (oversee the broadcast journalism and computer operation teams at the college); New Media (created and taught the college's first online journalism course and created Maryland Newsline, the college's daily online news product); Executive Director Emeritus, Maryland Scholastic Press Association (coordinated fall convention and week-long summer workshops, administered annual contests and quarterly newsletters and handled daily contact with high school journalism advisers statewide); Professional Outreach (maintain strong contacts with editors around the country to place students and alumni in internships and jobs); Former Chapter Adviser, Society of Professional Journalists (named best chapter in nation in 1994 and 1995). Named associate dean in fall 1998 after five years as assistant dean. (1993 to present).

Washington Director, Capital News Service, College of Journalism, University of Md.

Served as Washington bureau chief while overseeing entire CNS program. Teaching responsibilities included intensive one-on-one instruction of advanced news writing, reporting, interviewing, source development, research techniques, story development and document searches. Administrative responsibilities included directing coverage, recruiting students, overseeing Annapolis bureau operations and serving as liaison editor with clients, which included 16 daily newspapers, several dozen weeklies and four radio stations. Also taught Topics in Public Affairs Reporting in conjunction with bureau program. Taught graduate and undergraduate news writing and press-government theory courses on campus during summers.
